Linode’s Network Operations team is seeking a Network Engineering Manager who has the right balance of technical know-how and leadership aptitude to coach and lead by example but still participate in and execute on technical implementation alongside their team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing a team of Network Engineers whose work revolves around ensuring our global base of customers stay connected and our state of the art network is automated, secure, stable, reliable, and extensible for new features.

This is an opportunity to collaborate with and learn from highly-skilled engineers and talented peer managers. You will be a trusted member of the Network Operations team responsible for helping to guide and shape the future of the department, both organizationally and technically.

Technologies your team members use

We don’t expect experience with all of these technologies but you should have experience with some of them and an interest in learning about others so that you can support your team:

  • Wan and Backbone Networking - BGP, ISIS, OSPF, MPLS, QoS
  • Data Center Networking - STP, HSRP, MLAG, BGP, EVPN, VXLAN, Linux Bridge
  • Network Development - Linux scripting, Python, YAML, Jinja2, JSON
  • Automation - Salt, NAPALM, ZTP, NORNIR
  • Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, Netflow, Kentik, LOKI
  • Optical Networking - DWDM

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and continue to build a highly talented and highly technical team of Network Engineers and Administrators
  • Work closely with engineering leadership and product stakeholders to understand the needs of the business and adapt through effective delegation of priorities
  • Work hands-on with Linode’s Network Operations team to develop solutions to network issues and architect new innovative solutions
  • Lead by example, care for your team, and establish credibility with the quality of you and your team’s technical execution
  • Contribute to network equipment management, including budgeting, procurement, and forecasting to maximize cost/performance efficiencies
  • Provide senior management with detailed reviews and reports of service disruptions, metrics, and launch plans


  • 5+ years progressive network, system, and/or security application experience in a highly technical setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to coach and lead by example
  • Strong understanding of Linux, virtualization, scripting, and networking concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with administration of routers and switches via command line
  • Desire to innovate, ability to multitask, sense of ownership and urgency

Nice to Have

  • 2 years of experience leading engineering teams strongly preferred.
  • Experience with public peering and Internet exchanges
  • Professional networking certification (CCNA, CCNP, etc. or equivalent)
